Middle East map quiz set for Friday 10/29

On Friday, October 29, 2004, students will take a map quiz of the Middle East. Students need to be familiar with the countries, cities, bodies of water, and anything else they labeled on their maps of the Middle East.

Middle East Current Event due on Friday 10/29

The Middle East current event is due on Friday, October 29, 2004...Students are to find any article, story, or photo---as long as it has occurred or is occurring in any country located in the MIddle East. Students may use newspapers, magazines, or the internet. Once they have found an article the students need to write a brief summary about the story, article, or photo. Bring both to class on Friday and be prepared to share your current event with the class!

New Unit to begin Monday 10/25-The Middle East

Hello students and parents/guardians...a new unit is set to begin on Monday, October 25---The Middle East!!!

Students will learn the locations of the countries in the Middle East, such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Israel, just to name a few. Students will also become familiar with the economic strengths and weaknesses of these countries, their climate, the people who live there and their culture. We will also examine the spread of religions, specifically Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, which began in this region. Additionally, we will examine the wars in Iraq, past and present, and the Arab/Israeli conflict in Israel. It should be fun and the kids should learn a lot!

The students will begin by completing a map of the Middle East on Monday, October 25!

South America country quiz set for Friday 10/22

On Friday, October 22, the students will be given a quiz based on the information contained in each group's country presentation. Students were instructed to take specific notes during the presentations, and I will base the quiz on this information. Students will be allowed to use their notes on this quiz.

Students, remember to take good notes during the presentations and bring your notes to class on Friday!

South America Country Presentations Monday and Wednesday

Student partner/group presentations are to take place on Monday October 18 and Wednesday October 20. Students are to present their findings and bring their visual aids to the presentations.

South America country research project

On Wednesday, October 6, the students began work on a partner/small group research project. Students are completing research on a country in South America. This project consists of three parts; research, visual aid, and oral presentation.

Students are required to complete the country research record sheet, a visual aid, and perform an oral presentation about the country. The research for this report will take place in the classroom.

Oral presentations are expected to take place at the end of the week of October 11. During the duration of this project, students will generally not have homework; however, it is encouraged that they supplement their research, if needed, at home. Also, students may need to work on their visual aids at home depending on their progress in class.

Homework for Monday 10/4

Homework for this evening----refer to your map of South America and answer the following questions:

1. Name the largest country.

2. Name the bodies of water that surround South America.

3. Name the countries that lie completely or partially within the tropics.

4. Name the countries that have coasts along the Caribbean Sea.

5. Name the countries that have NO COASTLINE (we call these countries "land-locked.")

South America Current Event due Friday 10/8

Students and parents/guardians...A current event assignment has been given and is due on Friday, October 8, 2004.

Instructions: Students are to find an article, story, or photo that relates in some way to any of the countries of South America. Students may find this information in newspapers, magazines, or on the internet. Once you have found what you are looking for, cut it out or print it, write a brief summary about what you have found, and bring it to class on Friday, October 8. Be prepared to spend a minute sharing your current event with the class.

Food option: you have the option to bring a food of some sort to class on Friday, October 8. Your food must relate in some way to South America. You may find a recipe online and bake/make something. Please write a brief summary about your food.

South America Unit begins Monday 10/4

Students and Parents----today the students began a new unit----South America------by completing a map of South America, which includes all of the countries and capitals of South America, plus the surrounding bodies of water and other various features of the continent. This unit should last apporximately 2 weeks. Please check the website daily for quizzes, homework assignments, and other unit-related material.
