More Extra Credit Opportunities over the holiday break!

You may do any of all of the following extra credit assignments. Since we will be finishing up the semester with Europe, I would like to offer these extra credit opportunities for some areas that we will not have time to cover, such as Southeast Asia and Russia.

1. Research a flight itinerary to any of the following countries: Russia, Phillipines, Japan, China, Korea (North or South), Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, or Malaysia.

Find out how much it will cost to fly there from San Jose or San Francisco, what airline or airlines you will fly, the flight numbers, and the times of your flights. Be sure to include the cities in each country you will fly into and out of.

2. Complete a research report about any of the above-mentioned countries. This report may be similar to the research we have done in class in the past. Some things you might want to include in your report: Capital city, major cities, populations, climate of the country, natural resources, exports and imports, and what people do there to make money (their industries). You should also include something about the history of the country and their culture. Culture, remember, is all about the people of the country---how do they dress, what do they eat, what do they do for fun and entertainment, music, arts, holidays, sports and recreation, and anything else you can find about culture.

Your report should be computer-generated or written neatly in ink. Do not cut and paste information. This must be put into your own words. You may supplement your report with pictures, illustrations, or anything else that can represent your country report.

3. Research the Korean War. Find out when this war was fought, who were the participants, and why it was fought. Who won the war? Were there any famous people associated with the war? Did the war change anything in the country? Is there a monument or statue somewhere in the United States that commemorates this war? Find out all you can about the Korean War. Use books, encyclopedias, or the internet. Again, you may write a report, computer-generated or neatly written ink. Please do not cut and paste.

4. Research the Vietnam War. Find out when this war was fought, who were the participants, and why it was fought. Who won the war? Were there any famous people associated with the war? Did the war change anything in the country? Is there a monument or statue somewhere in the United States that commemorates this war? Also, name the U.S. Presidents who served as President during the Vietnam War. Books, encyclopedias, or the internet are okay. Again, you may write a report, computer-generated or neatly written in ink. Please do not cut and paste.

5. Current event assignment for any of the above-mentioned countries. You may treat this as you would our regular current event assignments. Using a magazine, newspaper, or the internet, find any story or article about something relating to any of the above-mentioned countries. Read the story/article, then write a brief summary. Attach the summary to your story/article and bring both to class.
