Tonight's homework:

Imagine that you and your family were living in New Spain, later Mexico, during the time that California was being settled with missions, presidios, and pueblos. If someone were to suggest to you and your family that you should move to this new province called "California," what would be the advantages (positives) and the disadvantages (negatives) in moving to this place known as California?

You can create a T-chart and list your answers in bullet format...

California Extra Credit Opportunities

Some extra credit opportunities for students, all connecting to California!

1. Research and find 10 companies that are based right here in California. Write the name of the company, what line of business they are in, and the city or ciites in which their home offices are found.

2. Research a famous Californian. This must be someone who was born in California, male or female. This may be someone from the sports, entertainment, or business world, or anyone connected to California historically. Once you have found your information (biographical data and what makes this person famous), conduct an "interview" with this person. Write at least 10 questions to ask this person, and then write the responses from your famous Californian as if you had interviewed him/her using the information you have found.

3. Research the history of the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Giants, or Oakland A's. Write a report (at least one-page) and explain when the team was established or when they moved to California, where they play their games, and if they have won any world championships and when.

4. Plotting and mapping of various California colleges. Find the locations of various California colleges. You may want to research where all 9 of the University of California colleges campuses are, and/or the California State University college campuses are (I believe there are about 18 of them). Once you have you list of colleges, plot them all on a map of California by placing a dot and writing the name of the college. You may include any California colleges of your choosing.

Check back soon for more extra credit opportunities concerning California! I will put up more in the next day or two. If anyone has any questions about these assignments, please e-mail me and I will answer.

Enjoy your winter break!!!
